Bassfield Volunteer Fire Department was established Aug. 31st 1987. Our district covers 151+sq. miles providing fire protection for app. 1/3rd of Jefferson Davis County with the remaining 2/3 rds being covered by the other 6 fire stations in the county. Mayor Buford Blount was instrumental in establishing the fire Department and was a strong supporter up until the time of his death. The current Mayor Pat Courtney is now following in his foot steps with her strong support.
We have 40+ volunteers including husbands, wives, children , grandchildren and members that are the great grandchildren and great nieces and nephews of original members. We have a Jr. Firefighter Program in place for our next generation of firefighters.
Our personnel are cross trained in every aspect of firefighting including EMS, auto extraction, search and rescue and public service. We are hazmat certified,  we have state certified members and all members are offered state certified courses. We have two meetings a month, one for business purposes and one for skills  training.
We responded to 427 dispatched calls in 2013 plus numerous public service calls including every home football game to control traffic and be available for EMS if needed.
We work closely with the Jefferson Davis Co. Sheriff's office. They have a substation located at our station. We have an emergency landing zone that we man and maintain for trauma patients that need to be airlifted. We also assist the local ambulance service and the county coroner. We work closely with Emergency Operations(CD) with the tornado siren for the southern part of the county located at our station.
Our facillity is equipped with cooking and bathing areas allowing us to accommodate our fire members and several families in case of a natural disaster, such as hurricane Katrina that hit our area hard in 2005. Our station is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Our department is about serving our community and family. We collect toys thruout the year to distribute to the children of the less fortunate at christmas. We have a christmas banquet every December to socialize and show our appreciation to our volunteers because without thier support our community would be the ones suffering.
